Democracy

Democracy delivers, providing real benefits for people. Information is the currency of democracy and we are living in an information renaissance, but the full potential of this era remains beyond the reach of many. The fundamental principles of democracy hold constant from the time of Mr. Jefferson and our challenge is to bend and bind new tools to yield the power of these eternal freedoms for all.

Enabling Civic Engagement at the OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting - 2010

The OSCE HDIM is a rare space in international relations where civil society can stand together with state representatives. We want to help civic participants make the very most from this exciting opportunity.

So, we created an on-line space in the JI Education Hotspot for civil society participants at the OSCE HDIM to use as a meeting ground to share ideas and experiences, to learn from each other, and to interact with experts in the inner workings of the OSCE.

We will also organize a classic in-person on-site orientation in Warsaw and Astana later this year, but our goal with this distance learning portal is to start the sharing and learning well before you see each other face to face, and to make sure that the learning and sharing with domestic and international constituencies continues well after they have returned home.

Patchwork Nation - 2010

Recognizing the need to look at elections a different way, Patchwork Nation was born four years ago from the inspiration of Dante Chinni and built into a living project in partnership with the PBS NewsHour and the Christian Science Monitor. It focus is on delivering national data with local context while remaining visually intuitive for the reader.

The interactive map helps break down national data to analyze how it impacts communities. And the graphic visualization tool lets users see data charted and graphed by county, congressional district or community type. It puts the data in the hands of the user, allowing him or her to compare different data sets and explore national data county- by-county.

The Jefferson Institute is proud to have partnered with Patchwork Nation in their 2010 relaunch, which involved porting them to Drupal, adding a district layer to their already compelling map of U.S. counties, and deepening the delivery of data visualizations for individual counties and districts with the Knight News Challenge sponsored VIDI data visualization toolkit.

Data Visualization for All - 2010

Data visualization works so well because the human brain is extremely well-equipped to process visual information. We can capture patterns and essential themes in huge data sets very, very quickly through visual means.

Unfortunately, the tools to create these visual representations are usually too expensive and difficult for smaller news organizations and everyday citizens to use, creating a gap for the future of community journalism. With the generous support of the Knight Foundation, we created VIDI, a suite of powerful intuitive Drupal data-visualization modules for anyone to use on any standard set of data ranging from government databases to demographics and statistics.

Mentoring Policy Research in the Caucuses - 2010

The goal of this on-line course hosted on the JI Education Hotspot and sponsored by the OSI Think Tank Fund is to help students acquire the structural and stylistic skills necessary to write more effective policy memoranda, and thereby to become better advocates for policy change. This incorporates not merely a more nuanced and strategic approach to paper construction, but to some extent, use of a rhetorical vocabulary and understanding of the elements of substance and style that they might be able to pass on to their colleagues.

The organizations receiving policy mentoring are the Caucasus Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development (CIPDD), headquartered in Tibilisi, Georgia, and the International Center for Human Development (ICHD), located in Yerevan, Armenia.
