This JI visual identity project was made possible with the generous financial support of the Kingdom of Norway, and is a part of a larger effort to enhance transparency and capacity for open media relations with the Serbia MOD. Maryland State Archivist Visits Belgrade Archives

Maryland State Archivist, Ed Papenfuse, met with archivists from the Military Historical Archive of Serbia and the National Archive of Yugoslavia to learn about their advanced efforts in the digital preservation and access. He also met with Ministry of Defense State Secretary Dusan Spasojevic, where they discussed the importance of sustainable revenue models for archives and also opportunities for sharing Serbia's best practices. Ambassador Morrison of Canada, Ambassador Blankenborg of Norway, and Dean Cvetkovic opened a new broadband internet lab for the Faculty of Security Studies in Belgrade, Serbia, concluding a library upgrade project of the Jefferson Institute. Tens of students were lined up outside waiting to use the lab, but we convinced them along with faculty to join us for a small reception. [more]

NATO: Past, Present and Future

Jack Petri, Jefferson Institute Senior Fellow, gave a presentation to students of the Departments of English and English Literature, at the Philosophy Faculty in the Niksic branch of the University of Montenegro. The presentation, "NATO: Past, Present and Future" was organized by the Director of the Alfa Centar, Aleksander Dedovic, as part of a government program to provide information about NATO to the public. In October, Petri gave a similar presentation to some 90 students in the Civil Defence Faculty in Belgrade, Serbia, organized by Professor Zoran Kekovic. [more]

Military Justice in Montenegro

The civil and military justice systems were unified in Montenegro after decades of existing in separate and parallel forms. Nevertheless, the current unified justice system has not developed sufficiently to address military matters. A joint workshop hosted by the Jefferson Institute and the OSCE presented an opportunity to address these matters as Montenegro begins revising its criminal code and defense-related legislation.
